RISD Museum
The RISD Museum holds 100,000+ works of art and design, everything from ancient objects to contemporary pieces, with a mix of rotating exhibitions and collection galleries. It’s part of Rhode Island School of Design, so the emphasis is on craft, materials, and how things are made, not just “fine art on walls.” Admission is $22 for adults, $17 for seniors (62+), free for youth 18 and under, and $12 for college students with ID. Federal Hill around Atwells Avenue
Federal Hill is Providence’s historic Italian neighborhood, anchored by Atwells Avenue and the surrounding streets. Expect a dense stretch of Italian restaurants, bakeries, specialty food shops, cafés, and wine spots, with plenty of nightlife energy on weekends. A local landmark is the gateway arch over Atwells with La Pigna (the pinecone sculpture) greeting visitors as they enter the district.
WaterFire Providence
WaterFire is Providence’s signature event, an award-winning fire sculpture installation created by artist Barnaby Evans and staged on the city’s three downtown rivers. On scheduled nights, “Full Lightings” illuminate 80+ braziers from Waterplace Park through Memorial and South Main Street Park. The lighting starts shortly after sunset and typically runs until midnight unless noted otherwise. Many nights include onshore programming like performance areas, art and food vendors, and installations, so it feels like a city-wide block party along the river.
