Things to do while in Hartford

Mark Twain House and Museum
The Mark Twain House is a 25-room Victorian home where Samuel Clemens lived in Hartford from 1874–1891, and where he wrote many of his best-known works. The house is shown by guided tour only, and the tour runs about 50–60 minutes through multiple floors of the home. Your ticket also includes access to the museum’s exhibit spaces in the visitor center, so it’s more than just a walk-through of the rooms.

Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art
Founded in 1842 and opened to the public in 1844, the Wadsworth Atheneum is the oldest continuously operating public art museum in the United States. The collection totals nearly 50,000 works, covering roughly 5,000 years across European and American art, from antiquity through contemporary pieces. One highlight for many visitors of the museum is American landscape painting. The museum holds 65+ Hudson River School works, including paintings by the likes of Thomas Cole, Frederic Edwin Church, and Albert Bierstadt.

Connecticut Science Center
The Connecticut Science Center is a hands-on museum with 165+ interactive exhibits in ten different galleries, plus live science programming and add-ons like movies and the year-round Butterfly Encounter. Exhibit areas cover topics like energy, space, engineering, health, and genetics. One local favorite is the River of Life gallery, built around the Connecticut River’s 400-mile path and its role in the region’s ecosystem and history.
